Hamestring Bridge

What is This Project?

This project will create a bicycle and pedestrian connection between the large residential areas north of Wedington Drive (Hwy16) and the Meadow Valley Trail with a new bridge over Hamestring Creek.

Why is it Important?

The City has received many requests for this connection over the years.   Currently people in the Wedington Corridor must choose to ride or walk on the unsafe bridge over I-49 or to go north they cross Hamestring creek over a sewer line capped with concrete.  During high water this is not an option.  This new bridge will create an all-weather trail connection across Hamestring Creek to the Meadow Valley Trail and the Razorback Regional Greenway.

What is the Current Status?

The bridge and trail improvements have been conceptually designed and can be constructed completely on city park land.  No property accusations will be necessary.  A flood study will need to be conducted to determine the bridge span to insure there is no change in the stream flood capacity.

When Will it be Completed?

This project is anticipated for construction in 2020 dependent on the flood study and the time frame for federal grant funding if awarded.

How is it Funded?

Funding for the City’s portion of the project comes from the 2019 Bond Issue that was approved by voters in April,  2019.  The City also plans to apply for funding through the Arkansas Department of Transportation for Recreational Trails or Transportation Alternatives.  If awarded, the grant funding would cover 80% of the cost and the bond funds would be used for the 20% City match.
